Matador opens satellite office in Wildwood, NJ
One of our label presidents thought he could open a secret office in the holiday hotbed that is Wildwood, NJ --- what better place to scout for new talent, but the eagle eye of our colleague Sonya Kolowrat discovered it before we could get our company stationary reprinted.

Surpise spoiled, we have now chosen to scrap the Wildwood annex, but reserve the right to try again in another beautiful American city, Homeland Security permitting.

Interpol

September 28 is the release date for Interpol's second album, 'Antics', recorded this past winter with longtime associate Peter Katis.

The album will be out one day earlier in the UK, with a 7"/CD single of "Slow Hands" coming out on September 13 (b-sides to be revealed shortly).

Interpol head out on the Curiosa tour later this month, followed by some intimate London gigs in early September. Headlining dates in North America for the autumn will be announced very soon.

After reviewing some 500 entries, Interpol have picked the 10 winners of the Short Film Contest.

A.C. Newman
Carl Newman's band are currently on a 6-week North American tour, with possible European dates to follow this autumn. There's an exclusive AC/NP t-shirt for sale at these shows, and while that sounds like copyright infringement to me, you might wanna buy one anyway. A video for "Miracle Drug" will be finished very soon.

Listen to A.C. Newman's live performance on KEXP Seattle on their web archive at kexp.org.

You can catch AC Newman making his US TV debut on CNBC's "McEnroe", August 11.

Mission Of Burma
The band just completed a whirlwind European tour followed by dates on Cape Cod, New Haven and Coney Island. Matador Europe just released a 7" of "Dirt" b/w "Falling", along with a CDEP (entitled 'Four Hands') of "Dirt" b/w "Wounded World Dub Mix" plus Burma's cover of the Dils' "Class War." Both formats of the single are available at the Matador Store.

Mission Of Burma will be playing Democratic Gain's "Jumpoff" party, happening July 25 at Boston's Avalon amidst all the DNC hoopla. Also on the bill that night are the likes of Bill Clinton and Al Sharpton. Having already shared a stage in the past with Choke of Negative FX, this probably won't phase the members of Burma.

There's a live version of "Learn How" included on a CD glued to the cover of the latest issue of 'Comes With A Smile', which also includes "Uncrowned" by The Wisdom Of Harry.

The New Pornographers: John Collins writes:
"Currently I'm trying to do my taxes for the last three years and it's just going great thankyouverymuch! Also, anxiously awaiting Matador intern-cum-beatpoet-style traveler Matt LeMay and two of his bandmates who are doing the Grand Tour of indierock chesterfields this summer, arriving in just a couple of hours. Ah, summer in southwestern B.C. I pity everyone everywhere else. My partner in all things rockin' David and I are outfitting a new recording studio space in a little hood in Vancouver that our friend Lois from Olympia likes to call 'crackton'. Come One Come All! We're also working, as always, on some of internationaly celebrated conceptual artist Rodney Graham's great songs. Look for his LP/CD 'Rock Is Hard'.

"My other band thee Evaporators is heading out with Kurt Dahle on drums for a week long tour down the coast with head-bangers the Icarus Line starting july 20. While we're out David, Pete Borne from Carls band and I are going to play a show in L.A. at spaceland thursday July 11 with Rodney who is opening a show at MOCA."

Yo La Tengo
Following some heavy duty global travel, Yo La Tengo played at New York's Anthology Film Archives last week accompanying the light show of Gary Panter and Joshua White.

You can see YLT performing "Today Is The Day" on CNBC's "McEnroe", August 5.

Pavement

This October, Matador will be releasing a double CD 10th anniversary edition of Pavement's fabulous 2nd album, 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'. In addition to a remastered version of the original album, we'll be including a number of extras including alternate takes/mixes, and previously unreleased songs. Think "The Great Lost Pavement Album" --- literally nobody has ever heard these songs before. Package will be an embossed, die-cut slipcase. Liner notes from SM, Spiral Stairs, and Gerard Cosloy.

Cornelius
Cornelius' website is undergoing a major face-lift (think of a young-looking for her age Jacklyn Smith) and the English-lanugage version will be up soon. Snazzy merch will be available for your buying pleasure this August.

Cornelius recently completed a remix for the Kings Of Convenience, with a September release promised.

Finally, we're told that "Cornelius will be participating in the "SOUNDxVISION 2004" exhibition which will be held in 4 prefectures within Japan. At the gallery/exhibition you'll be able to see the collaboration of Cornelius & Groovisions."

Matmos
Though Matmos just played a one-off date in Rimmi, Italy, the big news this month is that we've been contacted by a young man who claims to "be" Matmos:

Cat Power
We've been informed that recording for the new Cat Power album has commenced at the Atlanta studio Zero Return. Said studio's propreitors are down with the Bio Diesel initiative, which sounds like a great way to reduce our dependency on fuel that isn't vegetable oil.

More recordings are planned for Barcelona, New York and Jamaica.

M. Ward
The new M. Ward album, 'Transistor Radio' will be released by Matador Europe this coming January (and by Merge in North America). Said album features guest appearances by Jim James, Jenny Lewis, Howe Gelb, John Parish, Vic Chestnutt, Rachel Blumburg (The Decemberists) amongst others. We'll be releasing a new 3 song CD single in Europe this October. We just don't know which songs yet. Matt has the following solo dates planned:

Jul 29 - Carrboro, NC Cat's Cradle - Merge Records 15th Anniversary Party!

Aug 01 - Miami, FL - IO
Aug 07 - London, UK - Bush Hall
Aug 11 - Brighton UK - Hanbury Ballroom

Oct 19 - Vancouver, BC Commodore Ballroom *

* An Evening of Solo & Collaborative Performances Featuring:
Bright Eyes
Jim James (of My Morning Jacket)
M. Ward

M. Ward also appears on these recent or upcoming recommended recordings:

Jim White "Drill a Hole in that Substrate and Tell Me What You See" (Luaka Bop/V2)
A Tribute to Daniel Johnston (Gammon)
Por Vida: A Tribute to Alejandro Escovedo - trio with Vic Chesnutt & Howe Gelb (Or)
Band of Blacky Ranchette "Still Lookin' Good To Me" (Thrill Jockey)
Court & Spark "Dead Diamond River" (Absolutely Kosher)

Matador Alumni Corner
It is with considerable regret that we can confirm Matador will not be releasing the forthcoming album by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. The new JSBX full-length, 'Damage', will be released September 28 by Sanctuary.

Also coming in Septmber is the brand new album from Solex, 'The Laughing Stock Of Indie Rock' via the USA's Arena Rock Recording Co.

Finally, if that weren't enough for the old-friends-making-good dept., Thalia Zedek has a staggeringly great new solo album, 'Trust Not Those In Whom Without Some Touch Of Madness' (Thrill Jockey) coming out this autumn, too.

In the already-out bin, Cherry Red have just released a CD compiling the career highlights of Pete Astor's old band, The Weather Prophets. 'Blue Skies & Free Rides: 1986-1989. Among those waxing poetic, liner-notes style about the greateness of Astor (The Wisdom Of Harry)'s old band are Alan McGee and The Manic Street Preachers' Nicky Wire.

Mailbag:
Hey Gerard,

We have just signed a management deal with Bryan Chan, formerly of the Atlantic Records group LMNT and the TV series "Making the Band". Bryan has just completed recording 10 songs with BMG/Tall Boy Entertainment producer Sam Mizell (Jump5, RJ Helton), and the sound has been categorized as Clay
Aiken meets Train. With a loyal fan base, continued support from Disney, and a booking agreement with Evolution Talent, we are confident that Bryan
is in a great position to launch the next phase of his career.

WE WILL BE IN NEW YORK JULY 8-14 AND WOULD LOVE TO MEET WITH YOU. Bryan is performing at the Sports Illustrated 50th Anniversary Celebration on July 9, and then we are staying in town for meetings. Would you have an hour to meet with us?

LMNT's hit song "Juliet" has been in heavy rotation on Radio Disney for over a year (their longest running #1!), and their music videos are in constant
rotation on The Disney Channel. LMNT toured last year with BRITNEY SPEARS as the opening act on her "Dream Within A Dream Tour", as well as tours with Aaron Carter, Play, Jump5 and others. They are also featured on a number of recent soundtracks including the multi-platinum "The Lizzie McGuire Movie",
"Kim Possible", "101 Dalmations 2", "Radio Disney Jams 5", the just released "Disney Mania 2", and the upcoming "Radio Disney Ultimate Jams" CD & DVD.
